2006 Spring Season Class Notes Jun 20 - Due to lack of interest/participation from most team members, Team Lion's Pride's participation in the WKUHOF Karate Tournament has been canceled. Our last class of the Spring Season focused solely on weapons training. New skills were added where needed. Focus was made in the power and timing dimensions of weapons training. On a finishing note, I would like to thank Team parents for your support this season. Again, congratulations to all Team members for your success in competition! - Master Vergara Jun 13 - It's two weeks before our last tournament of the Spring 2006 Competition Team season, the WKUHOF Karate Tournament. A continuation from last practice, we worked on Point Fighting with 3-point rules for most of the class and presented weapons before ending practice. One more practice to go!
Jun 6 -We practiced and presented our weapons and empty-hand forms in preparation of the upcoming tournament. We ended class early as it was LJ's last practice with us. The Team took him out to Nikoli's Pizza to celebrate and recognize his awards and achievements as he was presented the inaugural "Lionheart Competitor Award" for his spirit of competition and inspiration to other team members. We'll miss you LJ. Good luck in your continued martial arts goals! May 30 - "Back to basics" class. May 23 - Off a high of a very successful tournament showing, we get back to basics in preparation of our next tournament, the World Karate Union Hall of Fame Karate Tournament in Tannersville, PA on Sunday June 25th. This tournament offers the "big three" events (weapons, forms and fighting). As always, we trained in basics (stance, power, technique, focused concentration, etc.) before presenting weapons and forms. We ended with two rounds of point fighting (3 point rules). May 16 - Last practice before the Arts of War Challenge Tournament. We had all team members present and were able to practice for the Team demo event in whole. Looks GOOD! We presented our forms and weapons as well. Good luck to all this Saturday! May 9 - Based on the outline of the Team Demo routine practiced last week, we modified the program to include those who were unable to practice on May 2nd, and had substitutes practice in place of those who could not make tonight's. Since we have one more practice until the Arts of War Challenge Tournament, next practice on May 16th is mandatory in order to practice the Team Demo event with ALL members! We also presented and performed weapons and empty-hand forms. It is highly recommended members participate in this Friday's sparring classes since we will have limited, if any, time to practice point fighting next Competition Team practice. May 2 - As the Arts of War Challenge approaches in less than three weeks, we continued to finalize the choreography of the Demo Team Event. We have the basic outline and next week we will fine tune the performance. With the completion of this routine, we will go back to our preparation of the weapons, forms and point fighting events as well as the much anticipated demo team event! Apr 25 - With almost the whole team making practice today, we spent most of the time choreographing the opening routine for the demo team event. Because not all members confirmed their participation in the upcoming Arts of War Challenge next month, we covered the basics so everyone had a good idea of what to expect in our performance. Since the pre-registration will come before the next practice (May 2), we will have a better plan by next class of student placement during the lineup. Hopefully, next week we can conclude the routine and get back to also touching base on the other events (weapons, forms and point fighting). Apr 18 - As we get ready for the Arts of War Challenge next month, we worked on basics, presented our weapons and open hand forms, and used the rest of class to work on skills to be used for the Demo Team Event. A note regarding the upcoming tournament: Point Fighting will be three-point matches with light head contact to side and top of headgear. Coaches will need confirmation of who will be participating by next Competition Team practice (4/25/06) and collect registration forms and fees in order to take advantage of pre-registration discounts. Apr 11 - Two tournaments down, two to go. We now prepare for the Arts of War Challenge in York, PA on May 20th. We had team members separated in groups by weapons of choice to exchange ideas of techniques and skills used in each others' creative weapons forms. We spent the rest of the class putting routines together for the DEMO TEAM EVENT at the Arts of War Challenge (i.e. Sajung, kicking and weapons combo, fighting techniques, and fall routines). Apr 4 - The Lion's Pride welcomes Eric Bossert and Nicholas Sather as the newest members of the Competition Team. Class went right to work with weapons; first we worked on basics and stances, then freestyle. We finished weapons practice with presentations. We discussed the sparring rules for the Maryland State Karate Championships this Sunday April 9th, including rules allowing specific types of head contact. We did specific sparring drills to address this situation followed by 5-point sparring matches. The upcoming tournament starts at 10am with Black Belt Weapons, and 11am for all age groups. The tournament is scheduled to be done by 3pm. Please note: You must be at your ring at the time your division starts. Otherwise you will be omitted from that ring. Mar 28 - We recapped the Team's performance at the Karate World Open. Details were provided for the upcoming tournament, the Maryland State Karate Championships on April 9th which will only hold three events: Weapons, Forms and Point Fighting. We practiced our basics. The saying "The mind leads the body" - Koichi Tohei, 10th Dan Aikidoka, was the basis for practice where we asked students to visualize their techniques and intentions so as to make what we visualize be reality. Self- and constructive-criticism exercises finished the class to improve body, mind and spirit demonstrated via empty hand forms. Mar 21 - Group pictures were taken. Next week we'll take individual pix. We discussed details of the upcoming tournament this Sunday (Karate World Open Championships) including directions, time and rules of each of the events. We focused on basic front and side stance, and front and side kicks drills. Members presented their empty-hand & weapon forms, and did 5-point and continuous fighting (remember, no more than 3 consecutive punches). Because of time, those participating in the Board Breaking and Self Defense will have a chance to practice for these events during regular classes the remainder of the week. (*see below for Karate World Open results) Mar 14 - The Lion's Pride welcomes Kevin Gebert as the newest member of the Competition Team. The issue of team uniforms was discussed and we hope to be straightened out for group pictures by next practice on March 21st. A supplemental practice schedule is being considered for alternating weekends to be run by Sabumnim Shawn Lerew. As we did last practice, we focused basics to improve performance of empty-hand and weapons forms, and continued familiarity with the 5-point and Continuous Sparring format. Karate World Open Championships (March 26th) is 12 days away! Mar 7 - First Spring practice. The Lion's Pride welcomes Jessica Vergara as the newest member of the Competition Team. Practice focused on strong basics as the foundation of better performance. 5-point and Continuous Sparring was introduced in preparation for the Karate World Open Championships March 26th.
